I recently found myself alone in the middle of the neon-lit mecca of Las Vegas, where lights are the symphony of nature instead of the hills of Scotland where I was a week prior. With my camera in hand, I was ready to capture the essence of a ‘city that never sleeps.’ The Sphere was what lies ahead, a monument to modernism where U2’s melodies would make me surrender my soul and that will echo within me for a lifetime. My lens became my only companion, framing moments that would have otherwise been forgotten.
Street musicians, their chords seem to go mostly unheard from the people passing by, a long overdue reunion with Willie Williams, a visionary in his own right, and the chance encounters with ‘the locals’ of Las Vegas. Each one adding a line to the story of my life, culminating in a crescendo of shared humanity at a concert that was just short of a religious experience.
Vegas only added to the extraordinary pilgrimage of a vacation that was long overdue. Sleep didn’t seem to matter, jet lag probably had a lot to do with it, but there was a sense of drive that I haven’t felt in years – maybe even decades. That drive has resulted in a short concert video that has taken me more hours to edit than the physical time I was in Vegas. With the kindness of other concert goers, combined with photographs and videos I took while in Vegas (some I had a lot of explaining to do to a particular someone), the video highlights 4 songs from U2’s Sphere concert. So with that - I give you ’U2 Live at the Sphere’.
